Every facet of the African American culture changed during the Harlem Renaissance, including the clothing. In Palmer Hayden's "Midsummer Night in Harlem", the clothes that the people are wearing was very interesting. It was not until this time that men's fashion was given more and more thought. Men's fashion in Harlem did not differ from the fashion in the rest of the country. Suits became very popular, the shoulders were more filled out in order to give a more masculine appearance. Men's pants also became less tight. The significance of mens' fashion in Harlem is this was the first time that African American men were keeping up with the fashion in the rest of the country. Not only did they keep up, but they had one of the most outstanding styles of the time, the zoot suit. The zoot suit was known for their baggy pants and long suit jackets. Men would often add a hat with a feather to complete the ensemble. Women's style in Harlem differed from women's fashion in the rest of the world. It reflected elegance but also was flamboyant and over the top. They wore extravagant dresses and also cocktail dresses with rhinestones and other details added. High heeled shoes and silk gloves were also added to complete the ensemble. The women of the Harlem renaissance were not only innovative in the creation of these styles, but they also made many of the dresses and gowns themselves. Both the men and the women had to keep their styles functional and comfortable in order to keep up with the dancing styles of the Harlem Renaissance.
